Dark cabaret artist Aurelio Voltaire leaves the vampires, zombies and murder ballads behind for a heart-wrenching collection of songs about love gained and love lost. His eleventh studio album (and first Projekt release in a decade) sees Voltaire crafting his most mature and passionate release to date.

Throughout his 20-year career Voltaire has danced on the dark side with a sardonic smile, penning such tunes as “Zombie Prostitute” “Cannibal Buffet” and “Vampire Club.” He’s best known for “When You’re Evil” (from 1999’s debut The Devil’s Bris), a jaunty celebration of naughtiness befitting a Disney villain (as evidenced by the scores of Disney villain fan videos on youTube set to the song.) Also a classic track, “Brains!” (from 2002’s Boo Hoo) recounts an evil meteor hungry for human brains and was featured on the Cartoon Network show The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.

With a reputation for macabre, tongue-in-cheek skewering of everything from religion to the Goth scene to Star Trek and Star Wars, Voltaire has his serious side, too. Every once in a while someone comes along and breaks his heart, and the result is an album of gut-wrenching songs. His 2002 outing, Boo Hoo, was described by Projekt as “a breakup record for lonely hearts with an ax to grind.” Well, it’s happened again! Heart~Shaped Wound goes past an 8.9 on the heartbreak scale. The result of a short but tumultuous three-month relationship – the first after his divorce in 2013 – Voltaire found himself writing new songs that were earnest, brimming with anguish, regret and yearning.

Known for releasing an album a year, Aurelio Voltaire spent three years crafting Heart~Shaped Wound in between his hectic touring schedule. Defying classification, the album drifts seamlessly from Goth rock to folk, from saxophone-fueled torch songs to guitar driven indie-rock. There’s even an intense heavy metal ballad, “Leaves in the Stream,” a duet sung with Arch Enemy frontwoman Alissa White-Gluz.

Aurelio Voltaire returns to Projekt, bringing with him 20 years of genre-defying musical storytelling; often sarcastic, sometimes serious, always uniquely… Voltaire.

12. It's Bigger On the Inside

13. Expendable

14. Bitrektual (feat. Robert Picardo)

Description:

The sexual virtues of Data are sung, Tribbles are deflowered, Worf reveals what other parts of his body are ridged and Luke is horribly violated by every monster in the Cantina in this unbridled, X-rated romp through the Star Trek and Star Wars universes. Prepare to laugh uncontrollably as your childhood is blasted like Alderan into a million pieces!

Years ago while at DragonCon in Atlanta, Georgia, Aurelio Voltaire (formerly "Voltaire") entered the "Filk" room and came out transformed! His love for Star Trek and bawdy, drinking songs collided and the result was a 4-song EP called "Banned on Vulcan" that included the now classic "Sexy Data Tango", "The USS Make Sh*t Up", "Worf's Revenge" and "Screw the Ocampa". That CD has been out of print for some time now and Voltaire decided it was time to do something about it. However, rather than just rerelease it, he's rerecorded those four songs with a full band and written a bunch more Star Trek, Star Wars and even a Doctor Who song to add to the mix. The outcome is an absolutely hilarious collection of bawdy parody songs definitely not for kids, clergy or Cardassians!

Star Trek Actors Join Voltaire to Boldly Go Where No One Has Dared To Go Before!

Joining Aurelio Voltaire on this hysterical away mission are Garrett Wang, Tim Russ and Robert Picardo (Ensign Kim, Tuvok and the holographic doctor from Voyager respectively). Garrett Wang and Tim Russ sing back-up with hilarious results on the Voyager campfire song "Screw The Ocampa". Robert Picardo lends his talents to the bonus title track "BiTrektual" as well as plays Biggs Darklighter from the Star Wars saga on the wonderfully showtuny "Expendable", an epic battle between a Star Trek redshirt and Star Wars stormtrooper. Also on that track playing a Star Fleet officer are Tim Russ and Godhead lead singer, Jason Charles Miller as a stormtrooper. Jason Charles Miller also kicks off the album on the title track, "BiTrektual".

It's the most out-of-this-world, pervy fun you'll have outside of a wormhole!

Description: Voltaire, known for his tongue-in-cheek Gothic folk music, had spent his adult life saying he disliked Country music. That is, until one day when in a karaoke bar he was reacquainted with a Johnny Cash song called Folsom Prison Blues. "I LOVE that song," exclaimed Voltaire. It was followed by a Hank Williams song, a Merle Haggard song, songs by Kenny Rogers, Willie Neslon, Buck Owens and more. "It was then," says Voltaire, "that I realized that I didn't hate Country music after all. I hated what it had become. In my somewhat drunken state, I thought, wouldn't it be interesting to make a record of old-school country music, the kind of record that could have been released 40 years ago?" The next day, when the rum wore off, he still thought it was a good idea and he got to work. The result is a collection of original Country songs by Voltaire that pay tribute to the the original spirit of country. Humorous, occasionally dark and always truthful, these songs hail back to a time when country was about storytelling and getting to the truth of things. In that light, Voltaire fans will realize that this CD isn't such a departure for him after all

12. When You’re Evil (from the Deady mini-game by Artix Ent.)

13. The Beast of Pirate’s Bay (Original version)

14. Day of the Dead (Kid’s version)

Description: With his devilish goatee, turn of the century garb and rakish looks, one might assume Voltaire sings murder ballads on the Bowery - and to a fair degree you would be right. However, those people who don't wear black on a daily basis know Voltaire as the Evil Meteor creature on Cartoon Network's "The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy." If you've ever seen the episode where this tentacled, extraterrestrial rock tries to convince Billy to bring him the townsfolk so he can eat their "BRAINS!" then you've already heard one of Voltaire's songs. Voltaire also sings "Land of the Dead," the title track of the Billy and Mandy one-hour film, "Big Boogie Adventure."

No stranger to animation, Voltaire is also a recurring character in the popular on-line game, AdventureQuest Worlds. Every Friday the 13th, Voltaire leads players (a server-crashing average of 35,000 at a time) on a live adventure in which he sings his songs with lyrics changed to match the monster-infested battles in the game.

Voltaire says, "I have fans who now have kids and they tell me that their kids love my songs, but they have to skip over the ones that are not appropriate for the wee ones. Also, through my work with Cartoon Network and AdventureQuest I have a growing horde of 12 year-old fans, so I really felt it was time to make a record that was right for them."

Finally, all of Voltaire's age-appropriate songs are on one CD. On this disc Voltaire compiles his songs from Cartoon Network as well as five of his songs from the AdventureQuest game.

Sure to please fans and non-fans of Twilight alike is a never-before-heard version of his popular song, "The Vampire Club," where Voltaire simultaneously embraces and skewers Twilight in a way only he can! Also included on this disc is a spooky lullaby Voltaire wrote for his son, "Goodnight Demonslayer," which brings to mind British bandleader Henry Hall's "Here Comes the Boogie Man" (made popular again by the video game BioShock2). "The Beast of Pirate's Bay" is a song Voltaire wrote to perform at his son's school Halloween fair. Rounding out the track listing is "Crusade," a bit of fatherly advice where knights and dragons serve as a metaphor for the acceptance of diversity and other ideologies.

At the title states, this is not just a collection of songs for kids, it's a CD for "creepy kids." It is recommended for tweens/ages 12 and up. It contains fantasy violence, many references to monsters and liberal use of the word "hell."

8. The Beast of Pirate's Bay

10. This Ship's Going Down

11. To the Bottom of the Sea

12. Death Death (Devil, Devil, Evil, Evil Song)

Description: Gypsy punk, dark cabaret, sea shanties and Steampunk collide on the new CD by the original Gothic renaissance man and his skeletal orchestra of gypsy pirates.

After 10 years of releasing CDs through Projekt Records, Voltaire embarks on his first self-released studio album. And what a journey it is! Somewhere between concept record and full-blown musical, To The Bottom of the Sea tells the tale of a gypsy tinker and his tumultuous journey from his homeland in the mountains of Vorutania, to a watery grave at the ocean depths.

Back are Voltaire's signature gypsy violins and celtic rhythms (provided by long-time mates Kitzis, Goeke and Sorino). But new to the line-up is an accordion player, Franz Nicolay (World Inferno Friendship Society, The Hold Steady, Guignol) that catapults each track clean into the realm of gypsy punk (and piratey sea shanties on the second half of the disc). Also guesting on this CD is a cadre of all-stars from the gypsy punk scene including Johnny Kalsi (Firewater, The Dhol Foundation) on percussion, Ruet Regev (Firewater) on trombone, and Luminescent Orchestrii string players Sarah Alden and Rima Fand. The result is a turn-of-the-century romp sure to delight pirates, Steampunks and gypsies.

The Story:
The CD opens up with a Billy Bragg-styled anthem in which our narrator explains how the Industrial Revolution is responsible for the homogenization of our culture. This kicks off a flash back to a turn-of-the-century, Eastern block country called Vorutania where our gypsy tinker and his mates revolt against the evil Robber Baron who tyrannically lords over them. Hints and nods to Gogol Bordello are evident as the peasants rise up and later celebrate drunkenly through the next few tracks of unbridled debauchery. In a mid-CD highlight, Voltaire winks at his colleagues The Dresden Dolls with a hilarious parody of "Coin Operated Boy" titled "Coin Operated Goi" (sung in a Yiddish accent, no less!) But alas, like in any good debauched anarchy, the power void leads to the inevitable war. This ushers in a coupling of somber tracks where Voltaire's voice, in a more intimate setting, takes on a low, smoky growl reminiscent of Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave. Our protagonist tells his wife (sung by Polish chanteuse, Julia Marcell) that he must seek his fortune at sea. This lush and lyrical duet gives way to the second half of the CD in which our anti-hero sets out to sea and bring us all along for the voyage. Along the way are sea shanties, a rousing belly-dancing track and some Tom Waits-inspired dirges and romps. The closing track is a classic Voltaire skewering of society in which our narrator, back in the present day, explains why all of his tales must end so morbidly.

Voltaire's myspace page has long described himself as a "Renaissance man with Gypsy pirate band". That characterization has never been as true as it is on To The Bottom of the Sea. His 6th release really delivers the goods.

OOKY SPOOKY

Released by Projekt in 2007

HEAR THE FULL ALBUM RIGHT HERE!

Click on this link to launch player: https://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/3171472

Track list:

1) Land of the Dead

2) Zombie Prostitute

3) Cannibal Buffet

4) Day of the Dead

5) Blue-eyed Matador

6) Bomb New Jersey

7) Cantina

8) Stuck With You

9) Dead

10) Reggae Mortis

11) Hell in a Handbasket

Description: "It's a Halloween party in a jewel-box," Voltaire comments about Ooky Spooky, his most hilariously irreverent CD to date. Years in the making, Voltaire's 5th album contains a duet with The Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer, a track from a Cartoon Network movie plus his crowd-pleasing songs about zombies, devils and dancing skeletons. In fact necrophilia, cannibalism, prostitution, buggery, blasphemy, sacrilege, going to hell, bombing New Jersey and anal rape with a lightsaber are just a few of the charming topics covered on Ooky Spooky.

Back are the violins and cellos but new to the Voltaire sound is a horn section that brings to mind images of a mariachi skeleton band. But there is no doom and gloom here, mind you. The album bounces along with a mixture of klezmer, swing and ska that brings to mind such spooky-fun classics as Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party" or "Hell" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Voltaire's love for Cab Calloway is evident in the song "Cannibal Buffet" (which seems straight from a Betty Boop cartoon) and more so in "Land of the Dead" which Voltaire wrote for the opening credit sequence of the Cartoon Network movie "Billy and Mandy's Big Boogie Adventure."

As serious as it gets on Ooky Spooky is "Stuck With You," a duet with The Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer. It's about a bickering married couple, but even on this one kittens are drowned, Korean bayonets are employed and skeletons sing to each other from side-by-side coffins. "I got all of the serious songs out of the way on Then And Again," comments Voltaire, "specifically so that Ooky Spooky could be a non-stop party of fun songs about the undead and hell and devils and skeletons and all of the other fun stuff that's so close to my heart."

THE DEVIL TAKES A HOLIDAY
Known for his dark humor, Voltaire temporarily hangs up his horns on Then And Again, nine gorgeous songs of love lost where no one gets beheaded! This is the album that turns your parents into Voltaire fans! Serious, heartfelt and mature, Voltaire shows his versatility as an artist.
Years before Voltaire cemented himself as a master of cynicism and dark humor with his debut CD, The Devil’s Bris ("When You’re Evil,""Ex Lover’s Lover," etc), his material was of a decidedly more serious nature. In the early nineties, Voltaire wrote songs of lost love ("The Happy Song," "Believe," and "Wall Of Pride"). However, he hadn’t yet discovered the joys of writing vengeful murder ballads. Ditties about seeking revenge on those who had hurt him by chopping them to bits wouldn’t happen until just before his debut release in 1998. Upon the release of Bris, he found an audience for his special brand of dark sarcasm and thus found it easy to focus on writing material of that nature. He says, “I am by nature a sarcastic bastard, so naturally that’s going to come across in my songs." And thus Voltaire came to be known as the spooky guy who wrote dark yet humorous songs of betrayal and revenge.
“But nobody is one-dimensional,” says Voltaire. “ we are all multi faceted beings so of course I’m going to write material that reflects other mindsets and moods.” His albums have always reflected that by having a balance of the humorous, the poignant, as well as the heartfelt. But by his third release (Boo Hoo) he had come full circle. “I was writing more and more serious material and I felt Boo Hoo was in danger of becoming off balanced. It was then that I decided that my next two Cds would be divided into the serious and the humorous, the comedic and the tragic.”
While his next LP, Ookie Spookie was marked to be “an over-the-top exercise in dark humor," Then And Again is just the opposite. This is the seldom seen serious side of Voltaire, a collection of nine songs that span more than a decade. “Life is cyclical,” says Voltaire, “so I guess it’s no surprise that I have returned to some of the same themes I was writing about ten years ago”. Then And Again contains songs from as far back as 1990 and is complimented by new songs in a similar theme and style. The timeless quality of Voltaire’s music is highlighted, as the earliest songs on the album are as fresh and relevant today as they would have been ten years ago.
Moreover, fatherhood has given Voltaire a greater breadth of subject matter as is seen on the more recent tracks ("Crusade"- a poignant anti-war message from a father to his son, "Goodnight Demonslayer" - a spooky lullaby that warns a child about humanity and "Born Bad"- a death-row inmate’s pleas to see his mother again.)

Description: THE DEVIL TAKES A HOLIDAY ...

Description: Known for his satirical dark humor, Voltaire gives love the finger on Boo Hoo: a break up record for lonely hearts with an ax to grind! This isn't a CD you share with the one you love. This is the CD you send to your ex! Voltaire's third CD explores the soulfulness of modern music, yet does it within his trademark old world, acoustic gypsy sound. After spending the better part of the last 12 years in a somewhat idyllic relationship, Voltaire suddenly found himself with a one way ticket to Heartbreak Hotel. This led to an album's worth of material spanning the gamut of emotions of love lost -- from bitterness, remorse, sorrow and anger to irreverence, defiance, acceptance and consolation; mixed - of course - with heavy doses of the satirical dark humor Voltaire has become notorious for.

DESCRIPTION: On his debut release, Voltaire satirized the concept of Evil and the many ways it manifests itself in the world. Now, two years later, Voltaire returns with a more lighthearted look at life from the perspective of God's angelic cast-off, Lucifer, driven by pride to attempt the first failed coup in history.

Singing in a deep, velvety croon with all the passion, sorrow and bitterness of a fallen angel, Voltaire has crafted an album full of haunting Old World melodies and memorable pop tunes that you won't be able to get out of your head without a guillotine. Always the devilish wordsmith, Voltaire's songs dance between the sardonic, the heartfelt and the absurd. Whether he is singing about a lost love or a public beheading, Voltaire effervesces in a playfully boisterous mix of wit and old-fashioned merriment.

Spontaneously full of mirth and dark humor, Almost Human blurs the gap between the 18th and 21st centuries. This is pop music for a parallel universe, where Morrissey is the Queen of England and electricity was never discovered. Cleverly combining classical instruments with present-day song structures, Voltaire's New Wave band from the Victorian Era cavort through a cabaret suitable for the most contemporary of dance floors.

Description: Something wicked this way comes: Voltaire. Direct from the underground New York goth scene comes this strange brew of gypsy violins, driving rhythms, sardonic wit and turn-of-the-century mayhem. Combining beautiful old-world melodies with viciously sarcastic lyrics, The Devil's Bris is the Three Penny Opera of the twenty-first century. With Wagnerian bravado and Brechtian allure, Voltaire has crafted twelve songs of love, loss, revenge and dismemberment sure to bring a smile to even the darkest of souls.
